It's time that performers are actually given a scale to judge their worth to a company. Which isn't to say guys with a D or C aren't important, just that people say all too often that "so-and-so" is the best and "such-and-so" suck. I believe that it's time people take a step back from their own biased views and get their heads out of their ass (smarks) and actually set up a scale for performers. Aldo Montoya may have been the greatest performer to have ever lived, but that's not how it'll go down in the history books.
(Note: I DO NOT think Aldo Montoya.. or Justin Credible.. or whatever he wants to be call.. is the greatest anything in history.)
We need to set some real scales here.. length of ring-time in wrestling, how successful were they, major accomplishments, popularity scale, and how many top-notch matches have they been in. Just a few of many criteria people have to think of.
John Cena is set in all the mentioned credibilities, but smarks have a seizure everytime his name is mentioned. Taz was no different from Cena (actually, worse in terms of promos), but smarks get an orgasm after watching his matches. Truth be told that Cena has earned his spot in today's spotlight and nothing can take that away. I used to dislike Cena as much as others, but I started seeing his real quality.
Is he my favorite? No, not even on my top ten. I say this because smarks will call me a mark... which I am. I am a mark.. a mark for wrestling. I'm a mark for what I enjoy and I mark out for great moments such as the entire 2007 Royal Rumble.. Undertaker vignettes.. and every single RKO. Am I mark? Of course. Though, like you, Mikey, I think I've found a comfortable place between knowing what I like and want and knowing how to look for what I like and want.
I can't take credit for this report card idea. I stole it from PWI. I just condensed it because I figured nobody in their right mind would want to listen to me babble incessantly about these guys.
Lastly, I invite ANYONE who wishes to submit an entry for the report card on their own wrestlers to do so. Drop me an email. Tell me what you think. I'll check it out, and then put it up here. This place is meant for INTERACTION... and I'd love to be able to share your ideas on your own favorites outside of mine.
And one last thing....
If I were to turn around and dissect John Cena's grade, I would admit to the world right now he is not a technical wrestler by any stretch. However, with my own experiences, his past gimmick (illustrated on the Word Life DVD), and what I feel has been an enjoyable character even throughout this year long reign that has driven most people crazy, I would still give him the same grade I did. I would consider him a C in technical wrestling. does that make my opinion a little easier to swallow? I hope so.
man, I can't wait for the Cena haters to hit this one... FIND THE NEAREST FALLOUT SHELTER!
