Contribution to Wrestlingfigs.com Poll

The poll was placed for the readers of wrestlingfigs.com... I responded, and I thought it was legit to post here...

The question is...

What is your favorite gimmick character in pro wrestling and why?

Here's how I answered it.

Personally, I am a fan of gimmick matches, which is my own fault, but the gimmicks with the wrestlers, in my opinion, less is more. So, my winner for your question is NOAH's Takeshi Morishima. I am a big fan of a talent who walks in to the ring, hits somebody right square in the temple, suplexes their head off their body, and walks out like it's just another day at the office. His LACK of emotion and promo makes the gimmick just that much more enjoyable to me.

Since I went ROH, I'll try and come with winners on WWE and TNA. For WWE, I like CM Punk's "straight edge" gimmick. He doesn't give you the glamour or the glitz that some gimmicks does, he goes in, beats people up, and leaves. The use of the "addiction" aspect in the beginning was a little off, but now, it's just plain wrestling, and that's my biggest enjoyment. For TNA, the PREVIOUS incarnation of AJ Styles. Not the heel goofball waste of oxygen he's become, but before, when he was truly "phenomenal".

He was a heel in the beginning of TNA, and a damn good one too, from his high flying antics and evil attitude. Now, he's just a goofball lackey for Cage, and that, is the biggest waste and disgustingly poor abuse of talent I have ever seen. If he was allowed to be AJ Styles, and be phenomenal, and yet, be a heel to the fans, I would say Styles as a heel would rock. So, my answer stays. The PREVIOUS version of AJ Styles was the best gimmick TNA has had, from my eyes.

Just to follow up, in the WWE I like the gimmick that they have given Santino Marella. Using him in skits until he hones his wrestling skills a little more is pretty smart. He does really well with the "Italian guy" thing, especially after being a "Russian guy" in OVW. Comes from Canada, not sure of his true nationality.

In TNA, I think they do well with the Abyss gimmick. It would be easy for a gimmick such as this to be seen as a Kane mocking, and I think they use it well for it not to be.

I'm not as familiar with the other brands to name a great gimmick, but I know I miss Ultimo Dragon.

My favorite gimmick of all time was Taz's "miserable son-of-a-" gimmick in the original ECW (after he returned as the Tazmaniac).

My favorite in WWE right now is probably Umaga.

In TNA, I'm a big fan of Senshi.. always have been. Though I think the best gimmick they've done so far is Abyss. Although it has the undertones of kane and Mankind, I still enjoy it.
